New Era in the Music Industry? NIN Releases Free Album.
NIN just released their newest album, “The Slip,” today for download from their website. Price: $0.00. This is not like the Radiohead release though, the files to download come in multiple formats, including lossless and higher than CD quality:
the music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE.
This is something that could help change the music industry in a positive way for fans. Hopefully more and more artists can break away from the record labels who increase prices for product just to make another dollar.
Not only is the music free, Reznor actually encourages people to share the music any way they see fit:
the slip is licensed under a creative commons attribution non-commercial share alike license.
we encourage you to
remix it
share it with your friends,
post it on your blog,
play it on your podcast,
give it to strangers,
etc.
I applaud Reznor on this and hope the record sales on the physical release in July are through the roof! You can download the album from the slip’s website.
